Hil Doral
Hil Doral is a mountain city in the south of the Empire of Kurn Daruhm, close to the border of the Holy Kingdom of Alyren Shaeras. It stands in the valley of Mount Jharkorun, with a river passing through the centre and steep terraces rising on both sides. Workshops and factories occupy the lower levels, while the engineering academy, old halls and the fortress of Karak Gromthi are built higher into the mountain.
The city is the principal centre of dwarven clockworking. Its engineers make locks, measuring devices, lifts, mine pumps, mechanical tools and automatons. Some mechanisms are small enough to be carried in a pocket, while others form part of a bridge, factory or city gate. The most famous is the great Clock Tower, whose bells regulate work across the terraces.
Hil Doral is sometimes described as a city which replaced ordinary craft with machines. This is not correct. Every mechanism still depends on miners, metalworkers, carvers and engineers who understand its parts. Most clockwork in the city is powered by springs, counterweights, flowing water, careful gearwork or a limited use of magic. It requires constant inspection and is expensive to build.
The city's inventions have brought wealth and prestige, but also suspicion. Foreign agents and rival workshops have tried to steal its designs. Conservative dwarves use the destruction of Dhemuhm as a warning against work which moves faster than caution. Relations with nearby elves include trade and cultural exchange, yet the memory of the War of Endless Storms prevents either side from treating the border as harmless.
The Valley and Terraces
Hil Doral occupies a narrow valley where the river descends from Mount Jharkorun. The lowest ground is wide enough for roads, workshops and storage yards, but much of the city climbs the mountain in a series of stone terraces. Stairs, ramps and mechanical lifts connect the levels. A person can see a building directly above them and still require half an hour to reach its entrance.
The river is important to the city. It supplies drinking water, turns wheels used by workshops and carries waste away from the industrial terraces. Channels can direct part of its flow into reservoirs or beneath larger machines. Engineers watch the river carefully during winter and heavy rain because ice, flooding or debris can stop several systems at once.
The local gray stone is strong and easy to carve when first cut. Most homes and public buildings are made from it. Decorative gears, metal signs and moving figures are placed on many façades, but not every visible gear has a practical purpose. Wealthy workshops often display complicated mechanisms simply to prove what their owners can make.
The mountains provide ore and building stone, although Hil Doral cannot match the mines of Mirn Torum. The valley also contains forested slopes, grazing ground and a smaller amount of farmland. Fish from the river, mountain goats and hunted animals add to the food brought along the imperial road.
Earthquakes are the greatest natural danger. Even a small movement can disturb a precise machine or shift the foundation supporting a terrace. Retaining walls are inspected after every tremor. Rockslides sometimes close the roads, while deeper tunnels can become unstable without any damage being visible from the surface.
Districts
Hil Doral is organised by height as much as by walls. Heavy industry remains close to the river and road, while quieter or more important institutions are placed on the upper terraces.
The River Works
The lowest district contains water wheels, mills, loading yards and machines too heavy to move farther up the city. Ore, timber and coal are unloaded here. The noise continues through most of the day, and the channels around the workshops make the streets difficult for visitors to understand.
The Gear Quarter
Most clockworkers keep their workshops on the middle terraces. Different streets specialise in springs, teeth, chains, housings or the precise tools required to make them. Finished mechanisms are assembled only after their parts have passed inspection.
The Clock Square
The great Clock Tower stands in the centre of this public terrace. Markets gather around it, and its bells announce the beginning of shifts, council notices, fires and emergencies. The visible mechanisms behind its windows are maintained by a permanent staff.
The Academy Heights
The Academy of Engineering occupies several halls near the top of the settled valley. Lecture rooms, drawing archives and protected laboratories surround a court used to test new machines. Student housing fills the streets below.
The Old Stone Ward
This part of Hil Doral existed before clockworking became the city's main industry. Its homes, shrines and clan halls have fewer moving decorations and narrower passages. Several conservative guilds remain strongest here.
The Mountain Tunnels
Roads, mines, reservoirs and protected workshops extend beneath the terraces. Some tunnels are open to workers and visitors, while military passages connected to Karak Gromthi remain closed. Earthquake doors can isolate damaged sections.
Karak Gromthi
The ancient fortress is built into the mountain above the main approaches. It contains barracks, armouries, training halls and the controls for several defensive mechanisms. A community of soldiers, engineers and their families lives inside it.
The South Road Ward
Inns, caravan yards and customs offices stand near the road toward the elven border. Dwarven and elven merchants can meet here without entering protected workshop districts. It is also the part of the city watched most closely for spies.
Clockworking
Clockworking in Hil Doral is a collection of related crafts rather than one secret technology. A clockworker may spend an entire career making springs, cutting gear teeth or designing housings which protect machinery from dust and water. Large projects require many workshops to agree on measurements before the first part is made.
The city's machines use several sources of movement. Counterweights lift loads and close heavy gates. Springs power clocks, toys and small tools. Water wheels turn workshop shafts and pumps. Some devices use controlled magic to reduce friction, preserve a spring or allow an automaton to follow simple instructions. They are not able to think like living people.
Clockwork golems are the most visible creations. The smaller ones move stone, carry ore or perform repeated work in dangerous places. Larger construction golems can brace walls or lift beams. Guard models patrol a limited route and respond to signals given by trained keepers. They are valuable and difficult to repair, which is why they are not found in every dwarven town.
Most homes own at least one device made in the city, but many are ordinary clocks, secure locks or kitchen mechanisms rather than wonders. The popular image of every room being filled with moving machines is mostly created by the richer workshops and academy demonstrations.
Design theft is treated as a serious crime. Important plans are divided between archives so that one stolen document cannot explain an entire machine. Masters sometimes add a harmless false measurement to copies sold abroad. Rival workshops accuse each other of doing the same thing to their own apprentices.
Academy of Engineering
The Academy of Engineering is one of the most prestigious schools in Kurn Daruhm. Students arrive from across the empire to learn drawing, measurement, metallurgy, gearwork, mine design and the construction of automatons. Admission requires practical skill as well as money or patronage. A student who can repeat a book but cannot repair a broken mechanism will not remain for long.
The academy is governed by a council of master engineers. Each master represents a field of work, although guild politics influence which fields receive a seat. The council approves dangerous experiments, controls access to protected plans and settles disputes over ownership of inventions.
The destruction of Dhemuhm changed the academy. Experiments involving unknown magic or independent sources of power now require separate chambers, emergency exits and witnesses from outside the project. Engineers complain that the rules slow useful work. Others answer that Dhemuhm was destroyed because too many brilliant people believed caution belonged to somebody else.
Students learn through work inside the city. They inspect retaining walls, repair public clocks and serve in factories before attempting their own final design. Failed designs are not always considered shameful, but hiding a failure which could hurt someone can end a career.
People and Daily Life
The bells of the Clock Tower divide the day. Different patterns announce workshop shifts, market hours, academy lectures and the closing of mountain gates. Residents can recognise them without counting, while visitors often stop in the street trying to decide what has just happened.
Engineers possess great influence, but they do not run the city alone. Miners provide its metal, smiths make its parts, river workers maintain its power channels and farmers keep its markets supplied. A mechanism designed by a master can still fail because one cheap pin was made badly. This dependence creates respect between trades, but also endless arguments over who deserves credit.
The city attracts ambitious apprentices and inventors. Some arrive with useful ideas. Others bring drawings which ignore weight, cost or the existence of friction. Inns near the academy hold public demonstrations, wagers and debates in which a young inventor may gain a patron or destroy a machine in front of half the district.
Hunting and fishing remain common outside the workshops. Mountain goats, snow leopards and bears live around the valley. Cave spiders enter mine passages, while wyverns sometimes descend toward livestock or exposed terraces. The city pays for reports and organises hunts when a creature becomes dangerous.
Traditional craft remains important. Several families refuse to use powered tools for ceremonial objects, arguing that every mark should show the hand which made it. Clockworkers answer that a machine also carries the decisions of its maker. The argument has continued for generations and has not stopped either side from buying work from the other.
Trade and Work
Hil Doral exports precision tools, locks, measuring devices, pumps, lifts and specialised mining machinery. Complete automatons are sold less often because they require trained keepers and replacement parts. The city makes more profit from common reliable mechanisms than from the famous machines shown to foreign visitors.
Metal arrives from Mirn Torum and other imperial mines. Timber, leather, food and oils come from Hearth dwarf communities. Bhornholdir brings imported materials which cannot be obtained inside the empire. The southern road carries a smaller trade with Alyren Shaeras, including art, manuscripts, medicines and fine materials used for decoration.
Elven influence is visible in some music, carved patterns and public gardens. Dwarven merchants have sold tools and water mechanisms across the border in return. Neither government permits the free sale of military designs, automaton controls or plans connected to the mountain defences.
Faith
Durgadd Fireblessed is honoured by smiths, soldiers and many engineers who see invention as another form of creation. Doramin is connected with contracts, instruction and the rules which allow workshops to cooperate. Belrielle receives offerings from scholars and merchants, while Melkum is popular among those who depend on fire, chance or a clever solution appearing at the correct moment.
The city also maintains memorial shrines for those killed in industrial accidents, earthquakes and the War of Endless Storms. A broken gear is often left at these shrines. It represents both the work of the dead and the point at which a larger system failed around them.
Some priests remain suspicious of experiments which attempt to create power without fuel or labour. Engineers usually accept rules about safety, but reject the claim that invention itself is disrespectful to the gods. This debate became much stronger after Dhemuhm.
Defences
Karak Gromthi controls the main road and the entrances into the mountain. Its walls contain positions for ballistae and heavy crossbows. Covered passages allow soldiers to move between towers without crossing open terraces, and the main portcullis can be lowered by several independent mechanisms if one is damaged.
Hil Doral's most unusual defences are built into the roads and walls. Great gears move metal barriers across an approach. Counterweights raise shields over defenders. Sections of a road can be divided by gates which appear to be part of the stonework. None of this removes the need for soldiers. The mechanisms delay and separate an attacker so dwarven infantry and crossbowmen can fight on better ground.
The tunnel network is a second city beneath the visible one. Supply chambers, hidden roads and defensive gates allow the population to withdraw into Mount Jharkorun. Parts of the outer city can be abandoned without opening the inner halls. Only officers and appointed engineers know every route.
Earthquakes are a danger to these systems. Defensive mechanisms are tested after every serious tremor, and important gates can also be moved by hand. The city learned that a clever defence which cannot work after the mountain shifts is worse than an ordinary wall.
History
Hil Doral began as a mining and defensive settlement beneath Mount Jharkorun. Its river and narrow valley gave it water, ore and a position overlooking the southern approaches. Early inhabitants cut terraces into the slopes and built tunnels which later generations expanded into roads and workshops.
Clockworking developed from practical problems. Mines needed lifts, pumps and reliable measures. Terraces needed gates which could move heavy stone without hundreds of workers. Workshops began sharing standard measurements, and masters who had previously taught only relatives accepted apprentices from other clans. The academy grew from these agreements.
The rise of Dhemuhm created both competition and cooperation. Dhemuhm attempted more dangerous work with magical energy, while Hil Doral concentrated on controlled mechanisms which could be repaired. Engineers travelled between the cities, and some families still possess plans copied before the disaster. After Dhemuhm was destroyed, Hil Doral became the unquestioned centre of imperial engineering but also inherited responsibility for preventing another catastrophe.
The Battle of Mount Jharkorun
Hil Doral faced its greatest attack during the War of Endless Storms. An elven army approached Mount Jharkorun expecting walls, gates and ordinary dwarven defences. Instead, the city used giant gears to move barriers across roads and covered shields above the walls. These mechanisms protected defenders from arrows and made a direct attack on the gates difficult.
When elven mages damaged the outer works, the dwarves withdrew into the mountain. This was not a surrender. The tunnels contained supplies, hidden roads and positions prepared for exactly such an attack. During the second assault, elven soldiers entered the damaged approaches at night and found the passages closing behind and beside them. Dwarven forces emerged through hidden gates, and by morning the attackers had been destroyed, captured or driven from the tunnels.
A third battle followed outside the city. The remaining elven army fortified a position near the mountain. Tavla Ironheart led elite dwarven soldiers along smaller paths under cover of darkness. They struck the storm mages and command positions first, then opened an approach for the main force. The surviving elven army withdrew from Mount Jharkorun.
The original defensive gears were repaired after the war. Several damaged parts are preserved in the city rather than replaced, and academy students study them as both engineering and history. Later cities copied individual mechanisms, but none could reproduce the complete defence without Hil Doral's mountain and tunnels.
Rebuilding also changed the border. Elven and dwarven communities eventually resumed trade, but neither forgot what happened. Every period of friendship exists beside graves, damaged halls and different versions of the same battles.
Relations with Alyren Shaeras
Hil Doral is the dwarven city most directly influenced by contact with Alyren Shaeras. Elven music, literature and decorative styles reached the valley through merchants and older exchanges. Dwarven tools and mechanical knowledge travelled in the other direction. Some scholars on both sides believe that continued contact prevents another war.
The relationship is not a strong bond without conditions. Families who lost relatives during the War of Endless Storms remain distrustful. Elven accounts and dwarven accounts describe Mount Jharkorun differently. Spies and saboteurs have also attempted to enter workshops, giving the city a reason to inspect visitors who might be completely innocent.
Trade is allowed through controlled roads and recognised merchants. The most important designs remain inside protected archives. During a border crisis, the South Road Ward can be closed while the rest of the city continues working. This arrangement accepts that exchange and danger can exist at the same time.

Current Problems
Small earthquakes have damaged several retaining walls. Engineers disagree over whether public money should repair old districts first or protect the academy and main workshops. Residents below the weakened terraces argue that the order should be obvious.
Attempts to steal plans continue. Recent failures inside two factories may have been ordinary mistakes, sabotage or an excuse used by workshop owners who do not want to admit poor work. The city administration has not proved any explanation.
The academy is also divided over a proposed study of objects recovered from Dhemuhm. Supporters believe that understanding the disaster is the best way to prevent it. Opponents believe that bringing unknown machinery into Hil Doral repeats the decision which created the danger in the first place.
