Mirn Torum is one of the oldest and richest mountain cities in the Empire of Kurn Daruhm. It is built into the western mountains, close to the frozen border of the Forgotten Kingdom. The city is known for mines containing iron, gold, silver, mithril and the rare green mineral called Gorgonite.
The mines are the reason Mirn Torum exists, but they are also its greatest danger. Tunnels descend through unstable stone, underground rivers, gas-filled chambers and areas occupied by hostile creatures. Cave-ins kill miners every year even with the support of pumps, gates and experienced engineers.
Ore from Mirn Torum supplies imperial foundries and private smiths throughout Kurn Daruhm. Weapons and armour made in the city are especially respected because miners, smelters and smiths work close to one another. Problems found in the ore can be discussed before an entire shipment is ruined.
The discovery of Gorgonite made Mirn Torum even wealthier and brought direct imperial control into matters previously handled by mining clans. Inspectors record every legal shipment, while smugglers continue trying to hide pieces inside ordinary ore and finished tools.
Mountains and Roads
Mirn Torum occupies a high valley and several connected mountain faces. The inhabited city stands below the permanent snowline, although winter snow can remain for much of the year. Higher peaks protect the city from some directions while making travel difficult in others.
The main imperial road follows the most stable pass before crossing a fortified bridge into the lower city. Caravans leaving Mirn Torum carry ore, metal bars and finished goods. Those arriving bring food, timber, cloth, medicine and animals. The road is kept open for as long as possible, but blizzards and avalanches can isolate the city.
Smaller mine roads lead to outlying workings, watch posts and mountain villages. Some are no wider than one wagon. Passing places and warning bells are built into the cliffs so that loaded carts do not meet on the narrowest sections.
The frozen land of the Forgotten Kingdom lies northwest of the city. Mirn Torum is not inside that unnatural winter, but cold winds and magical disturbances sometimes reach the outer passes. Forts on the northern roads report undead movement and guide the few survivors who escape the frozen territory.
City Layout
Mirn Torum is divided vertically as much as it is divided by streets. Lower roads handle caravans and ore processing. The central halls contain government, markets and homes. Upper gates lead to mines, military positions and clan districts carved into the rock.
The Great Hall
A massive stone and iron building used by the city council, clan representatives and mining courts. Its public chamber is large enough to hear disputes involving hundreds of workers, although the most important negotiations occur in smaller rooms.
The Ore Yards
Raw stone is weighed, sorted and inspected before entering the smelters. Ordinary ore, precious metal and possible Gorgonite are separated under guard. Dust and noise make the yards one of the least comfortable places in the city.
The Foundry Tier
Smelters and heavy forges occupy terraces where smoke can be directed away from most homes. Water channels, bellows and lifting frames serve several workshops. Fires are watched constantly because one accident can spread through connected buildings.
The Market Hall
A roofed market protects food and imported goods from mountain weather. Merchants selling luxury items remain closer to the Great Hall, while bulk grain, timber and animals are handled near the lower gate.
The Clan Galleries
Old mining families maintain halls along the higher interior passages. Their walls display contracts, tools and pieces of ore connected to important discoveries. Arguments over which clan first opened a tunnel can continue long after the tunnel itself has collapsed.
The Mine Gates
Several fortified entrances lead into separate systems of workings. Each gate records who enters, which tools and animals they carry and whether they return. Alarm doors can seal smoke, gas, flooding or creatures inside one section.
The Mines
The mines form a larger network than the visible city. Some passages have been worked for centuries and contain roads, shrines, sleeping chambers and repair stations. Others were opened recently and may still be poorly understood.
The upper workings produce ordinary iron and stone needed in large quantities. These tunnels are dangerous, but they are inspected regularly and contain the most reliable supports. Younger miners usually begin here before being allowed into deeper sections.
Gold, silver and mithril are found farther below. Reaching them requires lifts, steep stairs and passages beside underground water. Pumps remove water from some sections, while boats are used where a river cannot be drained without collapsing the surrounding stone.
Miners carry lamps designed to change colour or extinguish when dangerous gases collect. Masks and breathing cloths are required in marked areas. Rules are strict because one careless flame can kill an entire crew.
The Black Depths are the deepest connected workings. The name describes several tunnel systems rather than one cavern. Parts are abandoned after collapses or creature attacks, and older maps disagree about where they connect. Experienced miners refuse to enter without guards, engineers and enough supplies to survive if the main route closes.
Gorgonite and the Green Vein
Gorgonite was discovered as a deep green mineral with a faint changing colour under firelight. Properly treated pieces can strengthen weapons, armour and tools beyond ordinary metalwork. The process is difficult and poorly treated material can become brittle.
The first discovery caused the Green Vein Conflict. Several clans claimed ownership, while the crown argued that a resource important to the entire empire could not be controlled by one family. The dispute involved sabotage, murder and fighting beneath the city even though it never became a full civil war.
The settlement placed permanent imperial inspectors in Mirn Torum. Every legal piece must be recorded from extraction to sale. Mining clans consider this an intrusion into rights older than the empire. The crown considers it the only reason the mineral has not been sold to every rival of Kurn Daruhm.
Smuggling began almost immediately. Gorgonite has been hidden inside ordinary ore, hollow tools, wagon walls and even memorial stones. Punishments became more severe after foreign agents were caught buying stolen pieces.
Government and the Mining Clans
The city council includes representatives of important clans, guilds, temples and the crown. Mining law occupies much of its time. A dispute over a tunnel can involve ownership of the land above it, water passing through it and another clan's right to use the road leading to it.
Mining clans possess their own records and customs. The oldest families control valuable knowledge about the mountain, but they can also hide unsafe conditions or unrecorded extraction. Imperial inspectors monitor production, safety and Gorgonite shipments. They are necessary and widely disliked.
The city must balance speed against caution. Closing a mine protects workers but can leave hundreds without pay and delay military orders. Keeping it open can turn a manageable crack into a collapse. Officials who make the wrong decision are remembered for a long time.
Economy and Craft
Mining provides most of Mirn Torum's wealth. Iron is extracted in the largest quantity, while gold, silver, mithril and Gorgonite bring greater value in smaller amounts. Stone from the workings is used in construction instead of being treated entirely as waste.
Smelters produce metal bars for transport, but much of the best material remains in the city. Smiths create weapons, armour, mining tools and reinforced parts for pumps and gates. Their work is respected because it is tested in the same conditions for which it was made.
The city imports a large amount of food and timber. Mountain farms and animals cannot support the entire population. Merchants who control winter supplies can become powerful very quickly, which is why the council sets emergency prices during isolation.
People and Culture
Mirn Torum's population is overwhelmingly dwarven. Mining families measure their history by the workings opened, lost and recovered by their ancestors. Memorial walls record crews killed together because many bodies cannot be removed from a collapse.
Work is organised by bells and shift changes. The city never becomes completely quiet because some mines and pumps must operate throughout the night. Taverns are busiest when a crew finishes a long rotation underground.
Miners can be deeply superstitious even when they reject the word. They leave small offerings near dangerous turns, refuse to rename certain tunnels and pay attention to sounds outsiders cannot distinguish from ordinary settling stone.
General Tavla Ironheart was raised in Mirn Torum before becoming famous during the War of Endless Storms. The city presents her mountain upbringing as proof that its people can survive and act clearly while others become lost in difficult ground.
Dangers
Cave-ins, flooding, gas and fire kill more inhabitants than monsters. The city maintains rescue crews, but reaching trapped miners may require removing stone which supports another tunnel.
Trolls live in isolated valleys and abandoned workings. They attack travellers and mining camps, especially during winter. Guards use fire, heavy crossbows and coordinated spear formations against them.
Stonehorns are massive shaggy animals with curling stone-like horns. They are territorial and can throw sharp fragments when striking rock or shaking their horns. Miners avoid their feeding grounds rather than hunting them without a reason.
Crystal spiders build nearly transparent webs strong enough to hold a dwarf in armour. Their bodies refract lamp light and can confuse anyone trying to judge distance. Venom causes paralysis, making rescue difficult in narrow tunnels.
Thunderbirds nest on the highest peaks. Their wings are associated with sudden electrical storms. Most remain far above the roads, but a disturbed nest can make an entire pass unusable.
Blizzards and avalanches threaten the surface approaches. Warning horns are placed along the main road, and shelters contain fuel and dried food for travellers caught between the city and lower valleys.
Defences
The mountain provides Mirn Torum with strong natural protection. Fortified bridges and gates control the few roads suitable for an army. Mine entrances can be sealed, and internal passages allow defenders to move between positions without crossing the open slopes.
The same tunnels create risks. An enemy who found an abandoned working could bypass part of the outer defence. Surveyors search for unknown connections, while old clan maps are copied into protected military archives.
The northern forts guard against threats from the Forgotten Kingdom. Their purpose is warning and containment rather than conquest. Soldiers are ordered to report undead movement and avoid pursuing enemies deep into the frozen land.
History
Mirn Torum was founded more than eight centuries ago around rich mountain workings. It joined the growing empire because Durgadd's alliance protected its roads and allowed grain to reach the city more reliably.
Imperial investment expanded pumps, lifts, gates and deeper mining. In return, Mirn Torum supplied metal for the army and a large part of the crown's wealth. The city became influential enough that its clans could challenge decisions made in Mal Darum.
The Green Vein Conflict changed that relationship. Gorgonite brought wealth, but imperial inspectors and soldiers entered the mines. The settlement prevented open war without ending resentment.
When the Forgotten Kingdom fell into unnatural winter, Mirn Torum became one of the main bases guarding the border. Expeditions passed through the city before entering the frozen land, and very few returned. This has made local soldiers hostile toward plans for a grand invasion.
The city continues expanding downward because the most valuable known deposits lie beneath existing workings. Engineers warn that the mountain cannot be treated as endless. Mining clans answer that closing the depths would slowly end Mirn Torum even if it saved the city from one disaster.
Important Locations
Great Hall
Seat of the city council, mining courts and negotiations between clans and imperial officials.
Green Vein Office
The guarded archive where legal Gorgonite extraction and shipment records are kept.
Black Depths Gate
The last heavily maintained entrance before the deepest and least reliable workings.
Foundry Tier
A connected district of smelters and forges producing metal for the city and the empire.
Hall of Lost Crews
A memorial containing the names of miners whose bodies could not be recovered.
Northern Watch Road
The fortified route leading toward the border of the Forgotten Kingdom.
Current Problems
The deepest mines are becoming harder to support, while demand for mithril and Gorgonite continues to increase. Inspectors order closures which clans ignore. Smugglers use abandoned tunnels which may also provide routes for creatures.
The frozen border requires soldiers and supplies without offering profit. Mal Darum considers the defence necessary for the empire. Mirn Torum agrees, but argues that the capital should pay more of the cost.
Young miners increasingly leave for Hil Doral or Bhornholdir, where dangerous work can provide better opportunities. Clan leaders fear losing skills which took generations to develop.
