'''Khimtaruhr''' is a fortified city on the northeastern plains of the [[Empire of Kurn Daruhm]]. It guards roads leading toward the [[Krugmurd Horde]] and the [[Grand Duchy of Swanvein]], while also handling trade with both of them. Its garrison is larger than that of most cities of similar size.

The city began as a border fort, but merchants, smiths, farmers and soldiers' families settled around it. New walls eventually enclosed the markets and homes which had grown beyond the original defences. Khimtaruhr is now a permanent city, although military needs still influence its government and daily life.

Winters are harsh on the exposed plains. Food, fuel and animal feed must be stored before roads become difficult. Raiders and dangerous wildlife test the patrols throughout the year, while a failed agreement with an orc leader can turn a trading season into another border conflict.

Khimtaruhr's people have developed customs influenced by dwarven, human and orc neighbours. This does not remove prejudice or old grudges. It means that inhabitants who deal with the border every day usually understand it better than officials who only see lines on a map.

== The Northeastern Plains ==

Khimtaruhr stands on open grassland broken by low hills, shallow valleys and small rivers. The land gives the watchtowers a wide view, but it also leaves the city exposed to wind. Snow does not remain throughout the entire year, although winter storms can cover the roads and make direction difficult.

The main imperial road approaches from the southwest. It carries military supplies and goods from Mal Darum. Beyond Khimtaruhr, different branches lead toward Swanvein settlements and territories controlled by the Krugmurd Horde. The exact safety of those roads changes with politics.

Fields and livestock pens occupy protected land close to the walls. Farms farther away produce more food but are harder to defend. During a raid, residents move animals and stored grain toward fortified compounds instead of trying to protect every building.

The plains support large predators and unusual beasts. Patrols maintain warning posts beside watering places and common caravan camps. Travellers who leave the marked roads may avoid taxes, but they also leave the area regularly checked by soldiers.

== City Layout ==

Khimtaruhr is built for movement between gate, market, storehouse and wall. Its streets are broader and straighter than those of older dwarven cities because military columns and supply wagons must cross it without becoming trapped.

== Government and Border Command ==

Civil officials govern markets, property, courts and public works. The garrison commander controls the walls, gates, patrols and military stores. During an immediate threat, military authority expands. The difficult part is deciding when that threat has ended.

Merchants accuse soldiers of closing roads too quickly. Soldiers answer that merchants continue travelling after warnings and then demand rescue. Farmers complain when patrols take animals or food during an emergency. These arguments are part of ordinary government in Khimtaruhr.

Agreements with neighbouring powers are often made locally before Mal Darum has time to respond. A patrol commander may arrange the return of stolen animals, exchange prisoners or permit an orc trading group through a gate. The imperial court can reject these arrangements later, but doing so may create another conflict.

Swanvein merchants travel under the laws imposed after the duchy became a vassal. They are allowed to trade, but some guards treat them as subjects who should be grateful for permission. This behaviour causes complaints and strengthens resentment inside the duchy.

== People and Frontier Culture ==

Khimtaruhr is predominantly dwarven, but humans from Swanvein and orcs from the Krugmurd lands are regular visitors. A smaller number live permanently inside or near the city. Foreign customs are most visible in food, clothing, tools and market language.

The population values readiness. Homes keep winter supplies, and many civilians know where to gather during an alarm. Craftspeople are expected to help repair walls or equipment if a siege begins.

Festivals and fairs take place during the safer trading seasons. Competitions include archery, heavy lifting, animal handling and long-distance riding. Orc and human visitors sometimes participate, which can lead to friendship, arguments or both during the same event.

People born in Khimtaruhr often consider themselves more realistic about the Krugmurd Horde than dwarves elsewhere. They know that one orc group may trade honestly while another raids the same road. They also know that dwarven clans have broken agreements when land or mineral deposits were valuable enough.

== Trade and Work ==

The city imports food, cloth, timber, animals, leather and goods from neighbouring lands. It exports metal tools, weapons, armour, stonework and supplies produced elsewhere in Kurn Daruhm. Traders from the Horde bring hides, livestock, herbs and objects difficult to obtain in dwarven territory.

Military supply is a large part of the economy. Bakers, brewers, smiths and wagon makers depend on garrison contracts. This creates stability during tense years but problems when the crown reduces spending.

Farming is possible on the plains, though winter shortens the growing season. Communities raise hardy animals and store more food than settlements in warmer regions. A poor harvest can force the city to depend on caravans arriving before the roads close.

Crafts in Khimtaruhr combine traditions. Dwarven metalwork may use leather patterns learned from orc traders, while wagons incorporate methods used by human farmers in Swanvein. Conservative visitors sometimes criticise this. Local craftspeople answer that an object which survives the frontier does not need permission from tradition.

== The Garrison ==

Khimtaruhr's soldiers train with axes, swords, spears, crossbows, heavy shields and siege engines. They must be able to defend walls, fight on open ground and escort caravans through poor weather.

Patrols vary from small mounted groups to larger units with trackers and engineers. Their duties include watching roads, investigating missing travellers, hunting dangerous animals and preventing raids from growing into larger battles.

The Great Barracks has a respected forge and well-maintained armoury. Equipment is designed for repair because a patrol may be days from the city. Heavy crossbow bolts are made for the thick hides of frontier creatures, while long spears allow soldiers to keep charging animals at a distance.

Service is respected, but the strain is real. Desertion occurs among soldiers exhausted by years of vigilance, bad weather and repeated fighting over the same roads. Some disappear into neighbouring lands. Others join caravans under false names. The military treats desertion harshly because one missing guard can leave an entire patrol exposed.

== Wildlife and Other Dangers ==

Dire wolves hunt in packs across the plains. They are larger than ordinary wolves and sometimes learn to follow caravans until an animal becomes separated. Patrols use fire and crossbows to keep them away from camps.

Mountain lions live among the low rocky hills. They rarely attack groups openly but can stalk lone travellers or livestock for a long distance. Spear guards are posted around animal pens when tracks are found nearby.

Bloodflies are small, but swarms can weaken animals and travellers through blood loss. Camps near their breeding ground must move quickly. Smoke repels them, although the wind makes maintaining a protective cloud difficult.

Juggernaut Boars have thick hides and can break light fences or knock a dwarf from their feet. Hunting parties use heavy bolts and prepared barriers rather than meeting a charge in open ground.

Javelin Cats are long-limbed predators named for their sudden leaps. They attack from grass, rocks or low trees and retreat if the first strike fails. Their speed makes them more dangerous to scattered travellers than to a formed patrol.

Raiders remain the most organised threat. Some come from the Horde, some are deserters and some are mixed groups interested only in cargo. They watch patrol patterns and attack where imperial protection is weakest.

== Faith ==

Durgadd is worshipped by soldiers and smiths, while Doramin is important to judges, diplomats and anyone trying to hold a border agreement together. Belrielle receives offerings from merchants, and Melkum is popular among scouts and travellers who depend on quick thinking.

The main temples are smaller than those in Mal Darum. Roadside shrines are more common. Patrols leave offerings before a long route, and even soldiers who claim not to be religious usually avoid disturbing a marked stone.

Foreign traders may worship their own gods inside designated halls or private buildings. Public rites are permitted as long as they do not call for violence against the empire or interfere with the law.

== Defences ==

The outer wall is thick and deliberately plain. Towers are placed to watch open ground rather than impress visitors. The main gates contain two separate barriers so that a caravan can be inspected without giving direct access to the city.

Ballistae and heavy crossbows protect the approaches. Ditches and prepared obstacles can be opened or moved during an invasion. The city does not rely on firearms or cannons.

The Old Fort provides a final defensive position. Storehouses are distributed so that one fire or captured ward cannot destroy every reserve. Wells inside the walls are protected against poison and freezing.

Refuge towers around the farms warn the city and shelter civilians. They are not intended to defeat an army. Their purpose is to remain closed long enough for patrols to arrive.

== History and Foreign Relations ==

Khimtaruhr began as an imperial fort controlling northeastern roads. Families and merchants gathered around it because soldiers created demand and protection. Later walls were built around the growing settlement.

Relations with the Krugmurd Horde have changed repeatedly. Periods of war were followed by trade agreements, only for another leader or clan to ignore them. Khimtaruhr survived because it learned to fight and negotiate at the same time.

The conquest of Swanvein changed the city's eastern trade. Goods moved more easily under imperial control, but human resentment increased. Khimtaruhr became one of the main places where dwarven officials and Swanvein merchants deal directly with one another.

Modern imperial policy attempts to prevent small clashes from becoming wars. Khimtaruhr carries most of the responsibility. Commanders must answer quickly to a threat without making an action which Mal Darum cannot later defend.

== Current Problems ==

Trade with the Krugmurd Horde is profitable, but every serious raid creates pressure to close the border. Closing it punishes peaceful merchants as well as raiders and encourages smuggling.

The garrison struggles to retain experienced soldiers. Better pay helps, but many veterans eventually request transfer to a safer city. Replacing them with new soldiers reduces the knowledge held by patrols.

Winter stores have become a political issue. Merchants want permission to sell more grain before it spoils, while commanders insist on keeping reserves for a siege or closed road.
