'''Aelithia''' is the goddess of Law, Protection, Might and Truth. She is worshipped by paladins, judges, guards, advocates and people who use lawful authority to defend others. Her faith teaches that law is necessary for a healthy society, but a rule does not become just simply because a ruler wrote it. Unjust law must be challenged, changed and, when no honest remedy remains, resisted.

Aelithia appears as a tall elven woman in silver armour with gold filigree, carrying a bastard sword and shield. Her strength is shown as controlled and defensive. She stands before the person in danger and offers surrender before she strikes. This restraint is not weakness. Her followers are expected to fight when delay would allow serious harm to continue.

She was once a mortal elven noble, jurist and warrior. Aelithia exposed corruption, defended communities and was eventually killed during an attack arranged by the thief-lord [[Vorin]]. The previous deity of Law and Protection had also been murdered, leaving the divine mantle without a living bearer. Aelithia inherited that responsibility during her final struggle and rose as a true goddess. Vorin escaped mortal death through a different ascension and became her divine rival.

The faith remembers Aelithia as compassionate but uncompromising. She protects the weak, seeks truth and accepts that law sometimes requires force. It also teaches that anyone who carries a sword in the name of justice must accept stricter judgment than the people they command.

'''The Eternal Sentinel''' is Aelithia's most common title. Eternal does not mean that she existed before mortal history. It describes the watch she accepted after her ascension, a duty which does not end because a court closes or a ruler declares a case settled.

Her surviving legal seals depict a shield, a straight line and an open hand, suggesting that the modern scales were added after her ascension.

She is frequently shown with ink on one gauntlet or a bundle of petitions beneath one arm. These details distinguish the jurist from later portraits which present only a flawless warrior. Aelithia fought, but much of her mortal work involved hearings, records and convincing frightened witnesses that they could speak safely.

No portrait confirmed from her lifetime survives. Noble houses which later claimed her friendship produced several incompatible images. Temple historians rely more heavily on written descriptions from guards, petitioners and rivals.

Aelithia's divine form retains her elven appearance. She wears silver plate marked with restrained gold filigree, holds a bastard sword and carries a shield. The armour is bright but not untouched. Witnesses sometimes see scratches appear across it when a person under her protection is harmed.

Her eyes are described as clear blue or as the colour of daylight through ice. She rarely appears with obvious supernatural fire or wings. The most common sign of her presence is an unnatural clarity: spoken words are easier to remember, concealed doors cast honest shadows and people become aware of the exact promise they made.

When Aelithia comes as a judge, her sword remains sheathed and the scales on her shield move. When she comes as a protector, the shield grows large enough to cover everyone behind it. In battle, she offers one clear chance to surrender. Temple art considers it disrespectful to show that offer as uncertainty.

== Holy Symbol ==

Aelithia's symbol is a bastard sword set upright behind a silver or white shield. Balanced scales are displayed on the shield. The sword represents the force required to enforce just law, the shield represents the people protected by it and the scales represent judgment which considers evidence before rank.

The sword is not shown piercing the shield. Lawful force must support protection rather than destroy it. Some military orders simplify the design to a sword and shield, while courts often display only the scales. Temples prefer the full form.

Silver, white enamel and gold are the traditional materials. A poor worshipper may draw the symbol in chalk or wear a simple iron scale. The church teaches that an expensive emblem carried by a corrupt judge has less sacred value than a straight mark cut by an honest witness.

Cracked scales are used during services for a failed court. The symbol is repaired publicly after the judgment is corrected or the victims are compensated. It is not enough to hide the crack beneath new paint.

== Mortal Life ==

Aelithia was born into an elven noble house whose position gave her access to law, military training and political influence. Early temple stories describe her family as either entirely honourable or entirely corrupt, but surviving accounts suggest a more ordinary house which benefited from unjust traditions while considering itself respectable.

She first served as a legal adviser and officer responsible for the protection of petitioners. Aelithia became known for reading property records and tax agreements which other nobles treated as beneath them. Several of her earliest disputes concerned families removed from land through contracts they could not read.

Her work brought her into conflict with merchants, officials and members of her own class. Aelithia did not reject noble authority by itself. She argued that greater authority created greater responsibility and that inherited privilege could not excuse deliberate harm. This distinction won her allies among reformers and enemies among people who preferred criticism to remain abstract.

She later led armed protection for witnesses and settlements threatened after bringing accusations against powerful figures. These campaigns shaped the modern image of Aelithia. She used force when hearings were attacked, but she also insisted that prisoners be returned alive when a fair court was available.

The thief-lord [[Vorin]] became one of her principal enemies. Vorin did not operate only as a common bandit. His network stole evidence, altered records, bribed officials and made truth appear too expensive to pursue. Aelithia dismantled several parts of the network and exposed noble patrons who had used it against rivals.

== Ascension and Vorin ==

The god who previously carried the mantle of Law and Protection was murdered during a wider divine conflict. The exact killer remains disputed, and most churches separate that crime from Vorin's mortal conspiracy. What matters is that the responsibilities of the mantle remained without a stable bearer.

Vorin arranged Aelithia's final ambush after she obtained records capable of exposing his surviving patrons. She and her escort were attacked while moving the evidence to a protected court. Aelithia was mortally wounded but continued fighting long enough for witnesses and records to escape.

Temple accounts state that the unclaimed mantle answered her at the moment when she chose to defend others instead of preserving her own life. Law, Protection, Might and Truth gathered around a mortal decision which already expressed them. Aelithia rose, defeated the remaining attackers and found that Vorin had also crossed into divinity through the power, secrets and fear gathered by his network.

The two ascensions are deliberately contrasted. Aelithia inherited responsibility by accepting its cost. Vorin seized opportunity by ensuring that others paid his cost. Their rivalry is not only between law and theft. It is between truth which can be examined and control maintained by uncertainty.

Aelithia did not erase every corrupt law or reveal every secret after becoming a goddess. The Divine Pact and the limits between gods and mortal rule prevent such direct remaking of society. Her power works through clergy, revelation, protection and the courage of people willing to act.

== Portfolio and Divine Nature ==

'''Law''' under Aelithia is a public agreement about duties, rights and consequences. A law should be knowable before it is broken, applied without secret exceptions and capable of correction. Tradition may carry wisdom, but age alone does not make a harmful rule just.

'''Protection''' is the purpose which limits the other domains. A court protects people from private violence, a wall protects a city and a shield protects the person behind it. Protection which becomes permanent control can violate Aelithia as surely as open neglect.

'''Might''' gives law the ability to act. A judgment without anyone willing to enforce it may become a request ignored by the powerful. Aelithia therefore values training, courage and force, but requires those who possess them to accept stricter discipline.

A witness can be hidden, a military route can remain secret and private grief need not become public property. Direct lies presented as evidence or law are treated with particular hatred.

== Dogma ==

Aelithia's followers believe that justice and order are necessary for people to live without being ruled by whoever is strongest nearby. They support clear law, fair hearings and institutions capable of protecting the innocent. They are not taught to obey every authority without thought. A ruler who destroys the purpose of law cannot use the language of order as a defence.

The law should apply equally, but equality does not always mean identical treatment. A child, prisoner or injured person may require greater protection. A powerful official who abuses public trust may deserve a more serious consequence than a desperate person who caused the same material loss. Responsibility grows with the power a person chose to carry.

Truth is essential to justice. Followers are expected to speak honestly in judgment, contracts and oaths. Withholding information can be lawful when revelation would endanger an innocent person or betray a rightful confidence. Lying to make a false accusation, protect corruption or manipulate a court is never accepted.

Protecting the weak is not charity performed only when convenient. It is a duty. A guard cannot ignore violence because the victim is unpopular. A judge cannot make fair process available only to the wealthy. A ruler cannot demand loyalty from a settlement which receives no protection in return.

Might must serve justice. Aelithia's paladins train to fight because some dangers cannot be persuaded to stop. They are expected to place themselves between the threat and the threatened, offer surrender when it can be accepted safely and use no more force than is required to end the danger.

Finally, unjust law must be changed. Followers begin with petition, evidence, appeal and public argument. If these paths are deliberately closed and the harm continues, resistance may become a lawful duty in Aelithia's eyes. Such resistance still remains bound by protection of innocents and truth.

Aelithia sponsors several paladin traditions. The best known is the [[Order of the Holy Flame]], which also follows [[Galenar]]. Aelithia provides its duty of protection, lawful restraint and concern for truth. Galenar provides its refusal to allow proven guilt to disappear without consequence.

Not every priest approves of the partnership. Some fear that revenge will enter the order through Galenar's teaching. Others argue that Aelithia's courts require an external force willing to pursue offenders who own the court itself. The order preserves the disagreement inside its Covenant rather than claiming it has been solved.

== Worship and Rites ==

Most prayers to Aelithia are spoken before duty rather than after victory. Guards touch a shield before taking watch, judges wash their hands before opening a hearing and advocates light a white lamp while preparing a difficult petition.

=== Anointing of arms ===

A weapon or shield used in public defence may be anointed with clean oil and a line of silver dust. The priest names whom the object is meant to protect. A weapon blessed only for personal glory is refused.

=== Rite of Justice ===

The Rite of Justice is performed before a major hearing. The scales are tested with standard weights, the law is read aloud and every judge states any personal interest in the case. The rite does not guarantee a correct decision. It removes common excuses for a dishonest one.

A person seeking atonement must name the harm, hear what can be safely told by those harmed and accept a duty of repair. Prayer without restitution is considered incomplete. Where repair is impossible, the priest assigns service which protects others from similar harm.

[[Vorin]] is her principal divine rival. He rules through theft, secrecy, trickery and the manipulation of trust. Aelithia does not oppose every hidden act or every person who steals to survive. She opposes the use of uncertainty to make truth impossible and the creation of systems in which only the dishonest know the real rules.

Aelithia generally respects [[Doramin]] as a lawgiver, although their traditions differ. Doramin's clergy often emphasises stable codes and institutional continuity. Aelithia's clergy places more direct weight on whether the law protects. Their disagreements concern revision, emergency authority and how much a judge may depart from a written rule.

She values [[Durgadd Fireblessed]] as a protector and founder but distrusts conquest justified after the decision has already been made. His better priests accept that a realm strengthened by force acquires legal duties toward those it has taken under rule.

== Depictions and Sacred Art ==

Early mortal art shows Aelithia with petitions, armour and a practical cloak. Later divine art made her taller, cleaner and more distant. Modern temples increasingly restore the written records and witnesses to remind worshippers that law is work performed among people.

Court statues normally show the sword sheathed. Gate and battlefield shrines show it drawn but lowered. A sword raised above a kneeling prisoner is rejected by most temples because it turns protection into domination.

Her shield often contains small engraved lines representing laws amended after injustice. Wealthy temples once filled these with gold. Reforming priests prefer visible silver repairs, arguing that a corrected fault should not pretend it never existed.
