'''Bhornholdir''' is the largest port of the [[Empire of Kurn Daruhm]]. It occupies both banks of a wide river where it reaches the [[Sea of Storms]]. A massive stone bridge connects the northern and southern parts of the city, while docks, shipyards and warehouses extend along the river and the coast.

The city began as a smaller settlement handling river traffic. Many early dwarven clans distrusted the sea and left foreign trade to human and halfling sailors. This changed when the wealth passing through the harbour became too important to ignore. Imperial roads connected Bhornholdir with [[Mal Darum]] and the mountain cities, and the port became one of the main sources of imported grain, spices, textiles and magical goods.

== River, Coast and Harbour ==

Bhornholdir stands where a broad river divides before entering the Sea of Storms. The river is deep enough for large vessels in its lower part, although the strongest sea-going ships usually remain closer to the harbour mouth. Smaller boats move cargo upriver or across the city.

The Great Bridge is the main connection between the two halves of Bhornholdir. It was built with high arches and heavy foundations so that flood water and storm debris can pass beneath it. The road is wide enough for carts and foot traffic, but congestion is common when several caravans reach the city at the same time.

The sea gives Bhornholdir its wealth and much of its danger. Storms can rise quickly, and ships sometimes remain in port for days waiting for safer water. Harbour pilots know the currents, rocks and shifting river mouth better than foreign captains. A vessel which refuses a pilot may be charged a higher docking fee if it survives the approach.

Roads from the south and east meet at the outer gates. The most important route continues toward Mal Darum. Smaller roads reach fishing villages, farms, quarries and timber camps in the coastal hills. Patrols protect the main roads, but cargo which avoids the official gates often travels through less secure paths.

== Districts ==

The river does not divide Bhornholdir into a simple rich side and poor side. Wealth is generally greater in the northern districts, but expensive guild buildings stand close to poor southern streets because trade requires access to the docks. The boundaries change from one road to another.

Some jewellers work directly for merchant families, while others buy stones and metal through the guild. == Government and Influence ==

Bhornholdir is governed by a city council operating under imperial law. The council controls taxation inside the city, maintenance of the bridge and harbour, the city guard and agreements with local guilds. Imperial officials supervise customs, military matters and trade which affects the rest of Kurn Daruhm.

The Merchant Guild has great influence because the city cannot function without its warehouses, credit and shipping contracts. Noble families own land and fund public projects. The university provides experts needed by the government. None of these groups formally controls the council, but all of them attempt to influence its decisions.

The Mage's Guild is the most difficult institution for the government to control. It existed under agreements granting it internal independence in exchange for magical protection and assistance during serious threats. The exact limits of those agreements are disputed. City officials say the guild must follow ordinary law outside its tower, while guild members argue that magical matters cannot be judged by officials who do not understand them.

Corruption is common but not equally accepted. A small gift to make an inspection happen sooner is treated differently from allowing dangerous cargo through the harbour. The problem is deciding where one becomes the other.

== People and Daily Life ==

Bhornholdir contains the largest permanent foreign population in Kurn Daruhm. Dwarves are still the majority, but many dock crews, merchants and craftspeople are human, halfling, gnome, elf or orc. Several languages can be heard around Merchant Square on a busy day.

The city changes with the arrival of ships. When the harbour is full, lodging becomes expensive and the taverns remain crowded. When storms close the sea, sailors spend money they expected to use elsewhere and merchants argue over delayed cargo. A long closure can cause prices to rise across the empire.

Wealth is visible. A merchant family may live behind a guarded courtyard while the workers handling its cargo sleep several people to one room. The districts depend on one another, but they do not receive the same protection or repairs. Flooding in a poor ward can remain for days while water is removed from a guild warehouse within hours.

The Beaten Dragon is one of the best-known taverns in the Commoner District. It serves local workers, travellers and adventurers without pretending to be a noble establishment. Its sign shows a battered dragon with spread wings, while the walls inside carry hunting trophies and marks left by years of use.

== Trade and Industry ==

The port handles grain, spices, textiles, timber, magical goods, ore, tools, weapons and luxury items. Exports from the empire include metalwork, armour, machinery and stone. Imports are inspected at the docks before being moved to guild warehouses or loaded onto river boats and wagons.

Fishing remains important even beside foreign trade. Poorer families depend on fish which never enters the expensive markets. Salting, smoking, rope-making, sail repair and ship carpentry employ many inhabitants.

The Merchant Guild provides storage, contracts, credit and information about distant markets. Its members range from wealthy ship owners to traders with one cart. Membership offers protection, but fees and obligations make it difficult for a new merchant to remain independent.

Smuggling follows the same routes as legal trade. Untaxed goods, stolen objects and restricted magical materials can be hidden among ordinary cargo. The government searches ships, but every delay costs money and gives merchants another reason to pressure inspectors.

== Faith and Learning ==

The Temple of Doramin is the most important religious building in Bhornholdir. Merchants ask priests to witness agreements, sailors pray for an orderly return and families bring disputes which they do not want settled by a guild or court. The graveyard and catacombs make the temple an important place of memory as well.

Durgadd, Belrielle and Melkum are also widely worshipped. Sailors have smaller shrines which are not always recognised by the main temples. Foreign residents maintain their own places of worship as long as they follow imperial law.

The university is divided into several schools. Its School of Magic teaches recognised forms of spellcasting, while engineering students study construction, ships and machines. The School of History and Archaeology maintains a large library, and the School of Medicine operates a hospital used by people from across the city.

The Mage's Guild possesses a separate collection of magical texts and objects. Only its entrance library is generally accessible. Membership or direct permission is required to enter the higher levels.

== Defence and Crime ==

The South Gate, Great Bridge and harbour are the main defensive points. Towers protect the road entrances, and bridge positions can prevent one half of the city from being used to attack the other. Harbour chains and fortified quays can restrict ships during a threat.

The city guard patrols markets and main roads, investigates ordinary crime and protects government buildings. Dock guards concentrate on theft, fighting and cargo disputes. Imperial soldiers reinforce them during war, but Bhornholdir is not intended to contain an army as large as Khimtaruhr.

Storms are as serious as an enemy. Flood gates, drainage channels and high warehouses protect valuable goods. Poor districts receive less protection and are usually the first to be damaged.

The so-called Thieves Guild is blamed for much of the organised crime in the city. Its legal businesses make investigation difficult. Some officials are paid, some are threatened and some simply prefer a criminal organisation they understand over many smaller gangs fighting openly.

== History ==

Bhornholdir grew where river traffic could meet the sea. The first settlement was smaller and depended heavily on foreign sailors. As the empire expanded west, the crown invested in docks, roads and warehouses.

Permanent foreign quarters changed the city. They brought wealth and knowledge, but conservative clans accused Bhornholdir of allowing outsiders too much influence. Similar arguments continue whenever a foreign guild or magical organisation gains power.

The city became essential during the Ash Winter. Imperial ships purchased grain abroad while the empire's own fields failed. This saved lives, but it also allowed merchants to charge high prices. Several warehouses were attacked after accusations that food was being hidden.

The War of Endless Storms damaged trade even when fighting remained far from the port. Elven goods disappeared, ships avoided dangerous waters and the cost of food increased. After the war, Bhornholdir expanded its docks as Kurn Daruhm relied more heavily on distant trade during reconstruction.

Modern Bhornholdir remains one of the richest cities in the empire, but that wealth is not evenly shared. The port continues growing along the coast, while the council argues over whether to rebuild the poorer southern wards or move their inhabitants farther from valuable harbour land.

== Current Problems ==

Bhornholdir's largest problems are inequality, corruption and space. The harbour needs more warehouses, but nearly every section of suitable land is already occupied. Merchant families want poorer districts moved. Residents answer that their labour created the wealth being used to remove them.

The independence of the Mage's Guild creates repeated disputes. The city needs its protection and knowledge, but the council cannot easily investigate what occurs inside the tower.

Storm damage is becoming more expensive as docks expand into exposed water. Engineers can strengthen the harbour, but every project interrupts trade and causes arguments over who must pay.
